Beginning in the 1960s, many people have worked together to conserve the land in the Weir River Estuary.  The Weir River Woods was one of the first places to be protected.

In 1972, Massachusetts enacted the Wetlands Protection Act.  In 1985, at the request of citizens, the Weir River Estuary was designated a Massachusetts Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC).  In 1996, the Commonwealth passed the Rivers Protection Plan.  These acts along with key conservation acquisition resulted in major preservation progress by 2000.

Since the formation of the tri-town Weir River Estuary Committee, which has developed a Weir River Estuary Land Protection Plan, more land has been protected.  You are invited to become a donor-member of the Hull Land Conservation Trust to help protect the Chatham Street property, which preserves Weir River Woods habitat and provides an entrance to the Woods.
